Coaching means more work – or does it?
It’s an interesting question which often comes up. To answer this question, coaching means more work initially as you will start to work smarter rather than harder. This question often comes up because the director, executive or business owner is already working really hard. They just aren’t working smart. It’s not unusual to find the bulk of the work being undertaken is in actual fact employees work.
Coaching means more work by working smarter, not harder
A great coach will first seek to establish high levels of personal awareness in what and where the coachee is working. They will encourage you to take a detailed look at where you are spending your time. This, in turn, will highlight just how much work you are undertaking that falls into one of the following categories:
- Employees work
- Procrastination
- Unskilled high value
- Skilled high value
- Unskilled low value
- Skilled low value
From here your coach will challenge you to start to make smarter decisions in regards to the work you undertake. Essentially you need to be doing the work where you add value. If you’re a business owner you need to be spending time being the business owner. Doing business owners work. If you’re an executive or director then you need to focus on where you offer the commensurate value to the organisation. When you start to focus on where you add value you’ll experience a dramatic shift in productivity and not only yours but the team as well. You have to take the first steps towards self-management.
Coaching means more work in the short term: are you in it for the long term?
Taking on a coach will probably be one of the smartest decisions you can make if right now you believe you are working too hard. Having an outside perspective can be very telling in terms of your true productivity. Stop working so hard in your business and start to work smarter on it.
