Yep, this may seem a little odd coming from a coach on a coaching website, but the thing is I have the congruence to make sure I not only challenge my clients, I also encourage them to make sure they challenge me as their coach to ensure they get the most from each and every session, maximising coaching. I see myself as a professional coach (No, I’m not a self-licking lollipop);

I have been a Master Coach in the military and had the honour of being coached and taught by some of the world’s top coaches, Sir John Whitmore, Brad Sugars, Marshall Goldsmith to name drop a few. I’m also very much still learning the craft of coaching, and the most valuable learnings come each and every week from my clients during their coaching sessions.

Be clear about what you want to gain from the overall coaching experience and from each specific session. Before the session begins, decide on the key points you want to cover. Ask yourself, “If I could cover just one thing today that would be worth the entire month’s coaching fee, what would it be?” This level of preparation ensures every minute of the session counts.

1. First Things First

Prioritising your topics of discussion is key to maximising coaching. Coaching is not the place to save the best for last. Put the most important item at the top of your list. This way, even if only one topic is handled, the session will be worthwhile. If you’re unsure about your priorities, ask your coach to help you discover them. You’ll know you’ve hit the right topic when it resonates deeply.

2. Make Clear Requests

Once you have your list and priorities, clearly outlining your goals is a key factor in maximising coaching sessions. Write down your requests in one or two concise statements. For example, if your top priority is “How to make my business more profitable in the next 60 days,” ask yourself how you want your coach to support you. Do you need to brainstorm new ideas, develop existing ones, get resource information, or identify what you need to learn?

3. Cut that Chat

Keep the chit-chat to a minimum. While building rapport is important, it shouldn’t take up half the session. Remember, the focus of the session is to coach you towards your goals, not to engage in friendly conversation. If you want a cost-effective friendship, chat with friends who don’t charge you. With your coach, get down to business.

5. Train Your Coach

Give regular feedback to your coach so they know what works for you and what doesn’t. This will help them tailor their approach to suit your needs. Evaluate what made some sessions powerful and others less so, and communicate this to your coach. This feedback loop ensures your sessions are continually improving in value.

6. Make Sure Your Coach Trains You

There’s a reason you chose your coach, so ensure they are helping you commit to your goals. Let them know your strengths and weaknesses so they can assist you effectively. Understand what you need to achieve and make sure your coach holds you accountable. Clear commitments prevent misunderstandings and ensure productivity.

7. Clear Accountability

Establish what you aim to achieve from each session. Don’t assume your coach will hold you accountable without clarity. This will only lead to excuses and weakened relationships. Clear accountability measures ensure both you and your coach are on the same page, leading to better outcomes.
