Embracing a New Age of Working
Now many are not very adaptable and dislike change, yet we currently live in times of exponential change. Things are on the changes so quickly it is sometimes difficult to keep up and that is definitely the case in Business today. Now in my journeys as a business coach and the conversations I have, there is lots of debate in regards to the levels of engagement and disengagement in the workplace. The discussion about millennials, as though they are a new species and not forgetting the Gen Z’s who have just now impacted on the workplace. All of which merely demonstrate a sense of resistance to a sift into the next generation of workers. Indeed there is much the older generation could take from this to impact and improve on the levels of productivity, innovation, effectiveness and reach a business can have.
The Digital Nomad
My son having returned from 12 months in Sydney returned with a completely new outlook on work. It was the first time I came across the term ‘Digital Nomad’. I have to say, for a moment I was somewhat bemused with the term, you can image …. ‘What are you talking about?’ To which I was pleasantly surprised and my interest spiked. Now my sone is a millennial and with it has a different view of the world of work, a refreshing view in fact.
Outside of local employment and work he undertakes he has also developed a wide portfolio of work and projects from across the globe. Indeed he has worked on major projects without having ever actually met another team member or the business owner/manager. For that business, the globe is quite literally its oyster. Imagine in your business where you can you are able to seek out the very best for your business. So in thinking like a Millennial or Gen Z what might your business and the team be able to achieve?
The untethered worker or nomadic worker is here and here to make a difference. What’s interesting is there are less and less areas where we will enable and mobilise a completely new workforce. Think of the impact, with the introduction of augmented reality (AR), business intelligence (BI) and artificial intelligence (AI) there will be more and more opportunities for business today to have levels of reach, agility, efficiencies and profitability with a workforce it may never meet from across the global.
Now, there’s a challenging thought provoking thought!
