The Coronation of King Charles, A Lesson in Selfless Leadership

As a veteran of the armed services and today a high-performance business coach, I have had the privilege of witnessing selfless leadership in action, through operations on the battlefield and in the boardroom. The coronation of King Charles serves as an opportunity for us to reflect on the merits and challenges of selfless leadership, as well as the impact it can have on those who follow. Drawing from my own experiences and those of others, we will explore the concept of selfless leadership and how it can inspire us to hold a mirror up to ourselves, evaluating our own leadership qualities and aspirations and indeed how it can offer a positive impact on the way in which we choose to turn up each day.

Throughout my military career, I encountered numerous individuals who embodied the principles of selfless leadership. Time and time again, I saw how putting the needs and interests of others before one’s own could foster trust, loyalty, and a sense of camaraderie that is essential in high-stakes and pressure environments. The coronation of King Charles reminds us that selfless leadership is not just limited to the military but is a universal concept applicable throughout society, within the business world, and within community organisations.

The merits of selfless leadership are numerous and can be observed across multiple aspects of life. Firstly, selfless leaders are more likely to earn the trust and respect of their followers. In the armed services, we were taught that the most effective leaders were those who genuinely cared for their subordinates, ensuring their safety and well-being even in the most perilous situations. This same principle applies to all forms of leadership, as trust is built when people believe their leader has their best interests at heart. A simple focus I had as a leader was to ensure the soldiers ate first. Whilst that resulted, from time to time in going without, it was vital for me that the soldier was the priority.

Additionally, selfless leadership fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment. By valuing diverse perspectives and actively listening to the ideas and opinions of others, selfless leaders create a sense of belonging and shared purpose. In my time in the military, I observed how selfless leaders took the time to engage with their subordinates, seeking their insights and input in decision-making processes. This not only led to better outcomes but also instilled a strong sense of commitment and ownership among team members.

Selfless leaders also serve as role models, inspiring others to develop their own leadership skills. In the armed services, we were constantly learning from the actions and decisions of our superiors. As we observed their selflessness and dedication to the greater good, we became more likely to adopt similar attitudes and behaviours. This cascading effect can be seen in various spheres of life, as selfless leadership has the power to positively shape the culture of an organisation or community.

The Challenges of Selfless Leadership

However, selfless leadership is not without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles I faced as a selfless leader in the military was making difficult decisions that may not have been popular or easy to accept. In these moments, selfless leaders must summon the courage to stand by their convictions, even when facing criticism or resistance. To do this effectively, empathy and open communication are essential, helping followers understand the rationale behind their decisions and the ultimate goal in mind. Today in my role as a coach this is equally as important in the business environment.

Another challenge faced by selfless leaders is the risk of burnout. As someone who has prioritised the needs of others in high-pressure environments, I can attest to the importance of setting boundaries and practising self-care. By recognising when it is necessary to delegate tasks, take breaks, and seek support from peers or mentors, selfless leaders can maintain their own well-being and continue to effectively serve those they lead.

Lastly, selfless leaders may encounter scepticism or cynicism from others who question their motives or doubt their sincerity. In my experience, remaining authentic and transparent in actions and communication was crucial in overcoming such scepticism. By consistently demonstrating selflessness and integrity, selfless leaders can gradually build trust and credibility, fostering a culture of collaboration and trust.

As we reflect on the Coronation of King Charles and the lessons we can learn from his example, let us also consider our own leadership journey through the lens of selflessness. Whether you are a veteran like myself, a business leader, or a community organiser, embracing the principles of selfless leadership can have a profound impact on the people you lead and the legacy you leave behind.

In order to cultivate selfless leadership within ourselves, it is important to engage in continuous self-reflection and personal growth. When reflecting on your own practice of selfless leadership or simply how you would like to turn up day to day, consider asking yourself the following key questions:

  1. Motivation: What motivates my actions and decisions as a leader? Am I genuinely driven by the best interests of those I lead, or am I influenced by personal gain, recognition, or ego?
  2. Empathy: How well do I understand and consider the needs, feelings, and perspectives of my team members? How can I improve my empathy to serve better those I lead?
  3. Communication: Am I effectively communicating my intentions, decisions, and goals with my team? How can I foster open and transparent communication to build trust and ensure everyone is aligned with our shared objectives?
  4. Collaboration: Do I actively encourage and value input from my team members, or do I make decisions unilaterally? How can I create a more inclusive and collaborative environment that fosters a sense of shared ownership?
  5. Personal growth: How am I investing in the personal and professional growth of my team members? What resources, guidance, or opportunities can I provide to help them reach their full potential?
  6. Adaptability: How do I respond to changing circumstances or setbacks? Am I able to adjust my leadership approach and decision-making to better serve my team and our goals?
  7. Accountability: How do I hold myself accountable for my actions and decisions as a leader? Am I open to feedback and willing to learn from my mistakes?
  8. Work-life balance: How well do I balance the needs of my team with my own well-being and self-care? Am I aware of the signs of burnout and taking proactive steps to prevent it?
  9. Role modelling: How do my actions and behaviour as a leader influence those around me? Am I setting a positive example of selflessness and inspiring others to adopt similar attitudes and values?
  10. Continuous improvement: What steps am I taking to continually improve my selfless leadership skills? How can I leverage feedback, self-assessment, and learning opportunities to grow as a leader and better serve those I lead?

Honestly and thoughtfully addressing these questions, you can gain valuable insights into your selfless leadership practice, identify areas for improvement, and create a personal action plan for growth and development.

By contemplating these questions and making a conscious effort to embody selfless leadership, we can become better leaders and create a positive impact on the world around us.
