The Offensive Mindset – 4 Ways to Build a Stronger Mindset that Will Benefit You and Your Business

The key difference which distinguishes a good and bad entrepreneur is the mindset. When successful entrepreneur encounters a large obstacle, they will think to themselves ‘I can overcome this, I just need to do XYZ.’

When the appropriate actions have been taken, they are ready to take on more than a hundred obstacles in front of them. They go by the phrase, ‘An obstacle is often an unrecognised opportunity.’

When a poor-mindset entrepreneur encounters an obstacle, they will do exactly the opposite: suddenly they will activate a button in their head called the ‘defensive mindset’ and they will blame others for the problem, rather than take proactive action to fix the issue.

They are stuck to the belief ‘I will complete the difficult tasks at some point.’ No matter how hard you try to unglue them, they will be defensive with you and blame anything due to external factors.

So, what exactly is an offensive mindset?

According to Richard Martin, an offensive mindset is one that is ‘centred on seizing and maintaining the initiative.’ A person with an offensive mindset is likely to continue carrying out tasks even if they are feeling the strongest will not to.

They display proactiveness and focus on the positive side, rather than deliberately avoiding the negative.

An offensive mindset is not something you will develop overnight- it will require grit, determination, and resilience.

If you are unwilling to take any action and would like to continue being the reactive, defensive entrepreneur you want to stay with all your life, carry on.

If you are ready to take action and gain yourself a rich, resilient mindset, keep reading:

1. An offensive mindset rewards risk-taking

We live in a current culture where risk-taking is acceptable and recognised. If you are expecting yourself and your team members to grow, challenging the status quo will certainly help you on that journey to become the bigger version of yourself. If risk-taking is something you find challenging, this article may be helpful.

2. An offensive mindset requires you to build your strengths

We all remember self-reflecting on our work at school, writing down what went well and what could have been better. Well, it’s the same in business. It’s time to invert your weaknesses into strengths, and strongly reinforce what you are doing well at.

Revising your current strengths will gain you a competitive advantage in the business world, as well as give you the discipline you need to become a strong-willed entrepreneur.

 3. An offensive mindset means Creating a common understanding

I would like you to put yourself in the place of a team member. You have just been asked to raise as many sales as possible for the whole year, with no guidance on numbers or why you are doing this for the company.

With this lack of clarity and purpose, that would leave you quite perplexed and demotivated to complete this task, am I right? This is why providing your team with the vision, mission and objectives is key.

This is why I have created a free business planning template which has all the detail to share the mission and vision you and your team will require to understand to grow your business. You can get yourself a copy here.

4. Embrace change with an offensive mindset

Your business will never stay the same. It is constantly changing, and this means that you as a business owner and your team must be open to changing and improving yourself and the current processes in your business also.

There will be parts of your business that may stay more permanent for a longer period of time, such as creating systems in your business that work without you or the culture statement of your business. However, the things in your business that will be changing are the ones you should be prepared for. This is how you can best cope with change.
