What is the driving force behind you, your business and the team?

For the vast majority of business, they fail to determine what the Business Purpose is. Why the business exists. Interestingly for the vast majority of business owners, there was a strong drive and commitment when they started out in business or took the reins of a family business. Let us be clear it’s a courageous step to own a business. What’s challenging is so many business owners end up a permanent fixture in their business. They lose sight of what encouraged them to get started in the first place. Many often end up owning a job in their own business. They effectively lose sight of their WHY. Understanding ‘your why’ is the first step towards being able to determine your purpose and that’s ultimately what leads to business success. A lack of personal purpose can result in a loss of fulfilment in what you do, low or no inspiration. Caught in the daily grind of owning a job. Here’s a question to reflect on initially, something to help determine the foundation of your purpose.

What was my driving force when I first started out in business?’

Now there is every chance that you are currently living ‘your why’ unconsciously. Unknowingly it will impact on your decision-making process, interaction with others and your very being. What’s exciting here is the impact you can have when you bring it into your consciousness. Because at that point you will be able to shape just what it looks like and how it impacts your business.

From an understanding of your purpose, you’ll be able to define the purpose of your business. What’s exciting here is the impact that will have across the business.

One of the first keys to a defined purpose is the fact you’ll create resilience and loyalty within your team. The purpose will offer meaning to their roles and responsibilities. Essentially they will love their job and working in the business. We each of us look for meaning, although we don’t often look for it in our place of work. So, offering substance to their contribution, their place in the business will massively increase engagement.

It will drive excellence in the business through the pride of achievement. You and your team will have the drive to do better. The purpose will offer ever high levels of enticement to join your business, to be a part of it. Essentially the ethos of the shift towards a calling and being a part of something bigger than themselves.

The final point here is the outcome. Business is about doing business and one with a clear purpose will attract and retain the right customers. As they say, people do business with people they like and trust. Don’t underestimate the power of purpose in your business.
